  LeavingWT: Why Never Discuss Doctrine?

  among the various helpful pieces of advice i have read here from leavingwt, i have noticed that he often tells people to never discuss doctrine with a jw.

  i realize that discussing doctrine with a jw can be very frustrating, but i was wondering if there is a more far-reaching and less-obvious reason for this advice.

  like is it related to some peculiar aspect of the jw mind that the average person would not be aware of?.

  8.5 years. When it started I expected it to last at least 10. I know people complain that it was too long but I disagree. I think the US did as good a job as can be expected there.

  guest host anondude2 of youtube fame will discuss the issue of christmas and the watchtower cult followed by my extemporaneous (and some impromptu) comments.

  discussion will be interspersed with musical interludes of the season, at least three of which will be sung by me.

  The fear, in my case, is that it will come before I am ready. Everyone knows it is coming; nobody wants it to come too soon.

  If you want to read a good tale about what fear of death can do to individuals and to a society, Tolkien addressed it quite well in his writings on Numenor. The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, appendices to Lord of the Rings, and the Histories all have stuff on the topic.

  It's the reigning as kings while on earth I was referring to, anyway. They act as if they've been given the heavenly reward already.

  What makes you sure the 'rich' phrase means spiritually, by the way? Context of the previous sentence would imply otherwise.

  I'm with darthfader. Looks like a typo snuck in somewhere and nobody caught it.

  But that said, no, the ratings in the USA don't make sense. Violence is A-OK but a boob or an f-bomb will get you an "R" rating. It's ludicrous how this country views what is appropriate or inappropriate for minors.

  Letter of DA from attorney to Elders becomes gossip fodder -- Society, Elders culpable?

  that thread was about someone who had an attorney mail notice to their local congregation that they had terminated membership.
